My internet friend catherine put up a very thought-provoking post today, that ended up in a comments-brawl about whether bands should be obligated to play their long-dead hits at shows. I weighed in on the side of playing what the fans want, but I can see the artists’ point as well. I’m not going to say any more about it, since I already ended up blathering enough on catherine’s blog. You should read it, though.

But I will take the opportunity to link you to what I think is a pretty fascinating link on the general subject of “selling out”: Dave Eggers goes off on the Harvard Advocate.

Oh, and here’s a bonus link for catherine on our favorite issue: the future of newspapers.

i done talked about that post article already! you don’t love my blog like i thought you did.

I must have missed it. They are making me work hard, too. I figured you would have read it already, but I wanted to make sure. What did you think of the dumb tone of the writing (not to tip my bias or anything)?

  • J.

Hmm, that makes it harder for me to hate Dave Eggers. But I learned a good lesson. I no longer hate Dave Eggers on “principle.” I just don’t like his work. Am I still allowed that?

well, i REALLY hate that the article doesn’t have the technorati link to my site for some reason. bah! the tone was definitely a little talky-downy, if that makes sense. but that reporter lived in my old apartment in d.c. as tommy said, how smart can he be about all this stuff if ALL OF HIS MAIL is still being sent there?

J., you’re welcome to dislike Eggers’s writing, even though Heartbreaking Work is really pretty good.

catherine: seriously, those technorati trackbacks have been pumping up my hits like crazy lately. Although the Post readers don’t seem too keen on commenting :(

Maybe I should read it again. But is anybody going to talk about it in 20 years? Or even 10?

Hmmm, now that I’m aware that he’s not a sellout, I may have to revisit Heartbreaking Work in the copious free time that fill my days. That and No Doubt.

Dude, Gwen Steffani’s a total sellout (Holler back girl? Please!) Moving on: I have mixed feelings on the music front. Jake, remember when we saw Magnetic Fields and they purposefully didn’t play any of their “popular” songs? That sucked. But I thought you didn’t like how The Old 97s played all their greatest hits last spring because you wanted to hear newer material (am I wrong? This may have been in a drunken tirade post-show…) Anyway, you don’t want to talk about this anymore, so I’ll stop. Sorry! P.S. I wonder what Egger thinks of Charles Klosterman…
